about

In between times is, as we are fast learning to expect from Gaudi, a great listen from start to finish. It is a strong collection of 12 engaging tracks with a satisfying balance between vocal tunes and instrumentals that are bought artfully together to form a sonic journey greater than the sum of its parts. Follow the strong connective trail of reggae elements throughout and you will find yourself in an album of ever varying favorites that engages you by turns to move with it or kick back and relax. It is a skillfully produced and beautifully crafted album where the world of analogue electronica meets emotive vocals and virtuoso instrumentalists. Deep sentiments and impassioned lyrical delivery populate a soundscape where sexy dub bass-lines shape an album inspired by.. silence?

In between times was inspired, according to Gaudi, by the spaces between the notes, by the creation of simplicity rather than, the more common approach to much electronic music which is built up layer upon layer. This is an album created in the best traditions of dub, by stripping things back. Start with everything you have at your disposal but pare it all back to the bear essentials and use only what is necessary.. it is an album for our times in many more ways than one - not only in it’s sentiments but also in it’s construction!

Gaudi has not been alone in the creation of In between times and has worked with a noteworthy collection of artists, many of them pioneers in their respective musical genres and all of them highly respected in their own right. From The opening track “Put your guns down” featuring vocals by Black Uhuru frontman Michael Rose, which was written in collaboration with highly respected dub producer Twilight Circus, to the powerful anthem “Life”, featuring rising reggae star Jahmai, which combines hard hitting vocals and deep electro bass contrasted with melancholic and hauntingly emotive piano riffs. The atmospheric and ethereal electro-dub adventures of “Tamino and the temple of dub”, featuring on flute one of the godfathers of psychedelic trance music Raja Ram (from electronic duo Shpongle), contrasts with the entirely more earthy and rootsy dub number “I start to pray”: a truly distinguished collaboration between legendary dub producer and vocalist Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and UK electronic pioneers The Orb with the inimitable Dennis ‘Dubmaster’ Bovell adding his characteristically uncompromising bass to the mix - it’s a high risk strategy to put so many virtuoso artists in one song but one that pays off handsomely in the realization of this deep, elegant and very dubby track!

It is not only a deft blending of diverse genres that is noteworthy in this album, but also the diversity of first-rate collaborators. Hedflux, one of the UK’s hottest breaks producers, together with dub maestro Twilight Circus make a formidable trio with Gaudi on the track “Crucial Data”; Moroccan artist Tahar from Momo Project collaborated on “Hurriya” (meaning ‘Freedom’ in Arabic) adding vocals and traditional Moroccan Mondol to this powerful and stirring track. Highly respected author, philosopher and agent for change Greg Sams contributed his words and his voice to the soothingly deep and thought provoking track “Spiritual Orphans”. Star of the UK reggae and hip-hop scenes Deadly Hunta brings his raw vocal energy, ragga-style, to the contrastingly niyabinghi tones of “Babylon is fallin”; while Gaudi’s on-stage partner in rhyme, vocalist and prodigiously talented beatboxer, Danny Ladwa features on both “Why u wanna run” and “Unlimited possibilities”.

This album more than justifies Gaudi’s reputation as a musical frontiersman and “fearless music producer” (Billboard magazine) in it’s complete disregard for musical boundaries and stylistic separation... It is Gaudi style - the fusion of many genres into one distinct and characteristic style. It was forged in the musical space between the genres where the creative fires burn hot and where it is far easier to get it wrong than right- but get it right he has. Despite being an album with plenty of drive and no small amount of punch, it is also a deep and introspective work, one however with a world view. It is a mature album and its mood is shadowy and at times melancholic. it walks a line between emotions, echoing global concerns from a personal perspective, throwing positivity at the darkness and stark realism at positivity ‘inna warrior style’. The production and sound engineering are, as we have come to expect from Gaudi, of the highest quality, giving even greater impact to skillfully crafted songs and artful arrangement.

Gaudi has pushed the envelope with this album and in his quest for constant evolution has raised the bar once again.. Fed by his deep roots in the world of reggae and dub he has used this genre, the undisputed international language of music, to enable his individual style of music to speak to many people in many ways. One of Gaudi’s skills as a producer and performer, and something that distinguishes him from the thousands of EDM artists that are now crowding the market, is his ability to bridge the divide between the underground and the mainstream and this is something that is very evident in the breadth of appeal of In between times - each track opening the doors of smaller musical enclaves bringing forth rich musical pickings to the wider listening public.

Walking the line between genres, between philosophies, between cultures, between past and future, the spaces between the notes - that is what this album is about, It is to some degree where we all are now, a point of change.. In Between Times.
