Year 2000's recording project by Gaudi, Paolo Polcari (from Almamegretta) and Dr Cat, featuring Bill Laswell on bass.
As the project name says, it's WEIRD and it's DUB!
All experienced producers in their individual fields, bought together by a mutual love of reggae music and the urge to put their collective skills into the pot and cook up something fresh.
The result of this performance/production union is the album 'Recreational', an adventure into deep bass by three maverick bass-men, each bringing to the party similar tastes but different production skills and musical backgrounds. Gaudi and Polcari bringing an amassed wealth of reggae and dub history with them and Dr Cat a more Jazz oriented lean.
The bass-touch of "Dub Maestro" Bill Laswell adds to the album an extra depth and brilliancy all round!
This album is all about man making music as opposed to computers making music; in fact the only computer used was in the final editing. It was created using vintage analogue equipment - Moog, analogue synths and tape echoes with additional live Fender Rhodes, theremin, melodica and guitars.
The old school recording style - using all outboards with not a plug-in in sight - gives the sound dynamic texture and dimension, something that is often missing in much of today’s music where the sounds are generated by computer.
'Recreational' has its own authentic and distinctive sound and although it is most definitely contemporary in flavor, it remains true to the original roots of dub in it’s creation.
It is essentially deep dub, spacious and pared down in parts rich and intricate in others. Gaudi and Paolo’s dub expertise give Recreational its authentic and respectful dub character while Luca’s jazz influenced improvisations give it an easy-going, laid-back and in places, ethereal float which makes Recreational a well balanced and surprisingly accessible album.
